I have been intrigued by the concept of ‘the mirror’ for over a decade now. The concept I am referring to is that of what you see in your outer reality being a reflection of your inner reality. I have conceptualized it. I have contextualized it. I have learned from it, and I have grown my learning of it from my experiences through both application and dedication.
I feel compelled to share about this topic so that it is no longer a concept that is misused. I have found that misunderstanding, here, can create pain, self-condemnation and suffering.
And….this is not our fault. Our perception has been conditioned into misunderstanding, making us victims of a cycle of self-abuse in which we forget or at the very least, suspend, our innocence.
I remember something that came up in a session about a year ago. We were addressing ‘victim mentality’ and spoke to the mentality as being the thing that keeps the perpetrator alive. We spoke to how we can become unconsciously addicted to this pattern of pain.
The mirror misperception is when we are both the perpetrator and the victim, to ourselves.
What do I mean, here?
I mean that the Universe mirrors a brighter side of us….ALWAYS. If you or I, for example, perceive something on the outside as happening because we have done something wrong, we are making ourselves the victim of our own perpetration. We are misunderstanding the reflection.
Consider that, in both our dream state and our waking life, we are being shown more of our power, more of our grace and more of our goodness.
And consider that, if this were so, how our interpretation of both our dreams and waking life, would change?
It would change in big, bold ways.
The mirror of life is for the purpose of seeing our own inner landscape reflected back to us.
It is not literal.
Like the dreamer’s dream, it is symbolic.
It’s a reference to the subconscious aspects of self that are working and informing our psyche, underneath the surface.
The symbolism reflected back to us is meant to be healing, strengthening and empowering. It is the way of Spirit.
Spirit always speaks lovingly and simply but not dumb.
So, because, for instance, someone treats us badly, it does not mean that we treat others badly. It shows us to the part of ourselves that forgot it was worthy of respect and love. It shows us the ‘crack’ in our perception, the place where our foundation of self-worth is shaky.
The way in which we perceive events depicts our lens of life. Fear need not exist here. Nothing bad is going to happen to you if you see something bad. You have not done wrong and created the bad thing, either.
Life mirrors what is underneath the facade. And this is an important place to look to see if the facade layers over self-worth or resistance to self-worth.
What lens are we looking through?
We are to use the mirror of our experiences to change the way we feel about ourselves in more positive and loving ways, to move forward from outdated habit patterns and to free ourselves into greater expression of our souls.
The mirror is to uplevel consciousness.
Worthiness is the foundation, pointing us toward proper perception and interpretation. This creates healthy boundaries, insight and movement.
For example, one could have a triggering experience and ask, ‘What is this mirroring back to me?’ or in other words, ‘What is this showing me?’
Before answering, emotion must run its course.
The real answer will always be about love, and we will often, instantaneously, realize where it is that love has been held away….where we haven’t deemed ourselves worthy.
Imagine if shame had no place anymore.
Imagine if we saw ourselves through the eyes of our loving God, not one that punishes and condemns. Imagine if we saw ourselves through our loving mirror, not one that punishes and condemns.
The healing that happens here would be to cure one of the most ancient wounds that has ever happened to humanity….the hurt that was created when our belief about life, itself, was betrothed to guilt.
This is when we became a victim to God and in turn, our own perpetrator.
As if we could actually ever forget, forever, who we are.
We can’t.
The mirror is here to disintegrate guilt and shame.
Could the fog be the sacred detour to the gift? Could we polish away the grime and see that innocent child staring back at us?
I remember, some years ago, standing in the desert around a fire on New Year’s Eve speaking aloud my resolution. I spoke that I resolved to have only 'clean mirrors’ in my life.
I now realize I was resolving to choose to see my own self through eyes of loving acceptance and innocence.
